Summary

The ratio of the charge of and electron to its mass was the first bit of information known about the electron. In this experiment electrons are accelerated to a known velocity and then using a magnetic field they are forced into a loop. The using the radius of this loop the ratio of e/me is found.

Setup

This is a picture of the setup of my equipment.

A picture of the setup

The boxes on the left and right sides are power suppies. The one on the left supplies the current to drive the Helmholtz coils that create the magnetic field for the experiment. The supply on the right applies the voltage accrossed the electron gun to get the electrons moving. The meters on the left and right measure the the current through the coils and the voltage acrossed the gun respectively.

A picture of the setup

This is a close up of the Bainbridge aparatus. The two black rings are the Helmholtz coils. The glass bulb contains mercury gas and the electron gun or cathiode ray tube. The mirrored ruler on the back of the coil is use to measure the radius of the electron beam.

If you want to know more here is a link to my paper on measuring e/me using a bainbridge device. I only request that if you use my paper give me credit and link to www.phancyphysicist.com.
Thanks.
